Freimeisterkollektiv Rye (Straight Rye Whiskey) brings back the rich tradition of rye whiskey, once America’s most popular whiskey. Inspired by Eastern European and German immigrants, Rüdiger Sasse draws on this tradition and reinterprets it with a modern twist by using regional ingredients from the Münsterland region.
Unique Composition
With a carefully considered composition of 75% rye and 25% rye roasted malt, along with yeast and water, Sasse creates a dry profile enriched with flavors of vanilla, hazelnut, orange, rock candy, and dark chocolate. Using 100% rye, 25% of which is rye roasted malt, is a distinctive feature that gives this whiskey its characteristic flavor.
Traditional Distillation and Innovative Aging
Distilled in a column still (patent still) and refined in a copper pot still dating from 1880, with a deliberately lowered cutoff point, Sasse achieves greater complexity through extended aging and ester formation. The whiskey is aged exclusively in medium-toasted American white oak barrels, with the barrel warehouse specially designed to make optimal use of seasonal temperature variations.
